GREY COLOURED KITCHEN WORKTOPS / GREY GRANITES -QUARTZ

Grey is the new black when it comes to solid stone worktops. With the continuing popularity of Farrow and Ball-style paintwork on kitchen units, a softer look, avoiding the extremes of black and white, is very much to the fore. This seems to apply across the board, to different styles of grey stone – from very smooth engineered stones like Silestone Kensho, to soft natural-looking marble copies like Caesarstone Oyster, and from granular materials like Silestone Gris Expo, to more patterned natural stones like Steel Grey Granite.

One reason for this may be that many customers are now “second generation” granite worktop owners. They have had granite or quartz before, have enjoyed it, but are now renovating again and are looking to repeat the solid stone worktops experience. Some people want exactly what they had last time, but others, especially those who went for very uncompromising black granite, are looking for something softer, and less inclined to show dust and finger marks. Grey beats black and white when it comes to that kind of convenience, and is especially easy to look after when it is more patterned; very smooth greys can be pretty uncompromising too.

Our Brillo Gris quartz, held in stock, is a quality sparkly grey engineered stone that compares well to many other products available on the market. It is exceptionally easy to look after: if you have had black granite before you are in for a pleasant surprise! Sparkly quartzes have attracted premium prices in the past, but competition has helped to improve that situation. Don’t buy your grey sparkles elsewhere until you have had a quotation from us!

My favourite: Steel Grey Granite. The biro gives scale to the pattern. This lovely natural stone sells steadily, being great value, good-looking but not flashy, and wearing extremely well. I always feel I can recommend it with confidence; this month I reach the milestone of five years in sales at Affordable Granite, and in that time I cannot remember a staining, chipping or scratching issue with Steel Grey. On a shaker-style or other more traditional kitchen, I would personally consider it over quartz.
