CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR TRADITIONS

Christmas Traditions: What are your favourites?

It’s our last morning before Christmas and we have a blog to write. For a bit of fun, we did a quick round robin quiz of staff. What are your favourite Christmas traditions? Songs? Foods? Is New Year big for you? Here are a few of our answers.

Essential Christmas food – turkey. But Brandy Butter and Pigs in Blankets also scored high.

Turkey may rule Christmas traditions in the UK, but Luisa who helps us with our cleaning is from Romania, where pork is the big meal. Not that she eats it – she’s a veggie!

Wayne, our chief templater, is a keen angler. This catch from June this year would be perfect for a Polish Christmas: carp to be eaten on Christmas Eve. (Our Polish staff don’t seem to be huge fans, though!)

Of course, sprouts are the most controversial of Christmas traditions. Essential for some – and yet still the most loathed by a lot of us.

Sherry before lunch? To be honest, I’m not a big sherry fan. But then, to be more honest, I’ll drink anything. And “Would you like a glass of sheh?” seems to be part of Christmas to me. However, for most of us, sherry is a BIG no no.

And the boss has champagne. Of course.

Mind-boggling offer at Sainsbury’s. Do they sell ANY 75cl bottles?

Do you (and do you let your kids) open all the presents first thing, or is it “stocking presents” at dawn and “main presents” after lunch?

We are quite evenly split – though with the Poles and our French-influenced workshop manager doing it all on Christmas Eve.

And the boss’s family open theirs at 11.00 am. With champagne.

The Queen’s Speech – do we watch or not?

Evenly split, with the Speech making the list of essential Christmas traditions for a lot of us. Not the Continentals, though.

What’s your favourite Christmas game? It is a nice surprise to find that most of our families are into games. Charades and cards both popular, but two options stood out…

Twister – very popular! Why didn’t we do this for the office party??

Cards against Humanity. Not one I know. The boss informs me that it is not played when grandma is present. I bet champagne is involved.

Favourite Christmas song – Mariah Carey wins by a country mile.

Most loathed Christmas song – Slade. So here it is. See what I did there?

Quite a few of us seem to keep the TV off on Christmas Day – but we still have favourite Christmas themed films. Sweeping the board, and most popular across our various countries, is Home Alone, beating all comers.

Will you stay up to see the New Year in? The vast majority of us intend to!

But then, will we be able to be up the next morning? Most of us expect to be – although we have till 3rd of January to drag ourselves into work! I’m very happy with that, with a VERY major birthday happening in my family on the 2nd.

We hope you are enjoying a wonderful Christmas and New year holiday – we will be back here for all your granite worktop, vanity top and hearth requirements in the New Year!
