Guildford is a fairly large town — though smaller than Worthing or Crawley — yet it boasts a cathedral, which some might say makes it a city! The town has a rich and fascinating history, likely beginning as a stopping point where a gap in the North Downs meets the River Wey. It was here that the Harrow Way, thought to be the oldest road in Britain, crossed the river. Even today, Guildford’s shape and layout are still defined by the river and its crossings.
The town prospered with the arrival of the canals and has continued to flourish into the 20th and 21st centuries, thanks in part to the establishment of the University of Surrey and the iconic Guildford Cathedral.
