Can you cut my own granite?

We’re often asked whether we can cut or work on granite that customers already own. There are many reasons for this request — leftover slabs, reclaimed pieces, or simply a desire to reuse existing stone. However, our answer is generally a firm no, and there are two main reasons for that:

1 Our business is built around supplying and installing stone, not just providing a cutting or polishing service. When customers want to use second-hand stone because it was purchased cheaply, it’s difficult to align that low-cost expectation with the specialist skills, time, and labour required to fabricate and install granite worktops to our usual high standards.

2 When the customer already owns the stone, responsibility becomes a major concern if any damage occurs — and, occasionally, breakages do happen. For example, if a hob section from an old set of worktops were to crack, it would be virtually impossible to find a replacement that matches in colour or pattern. Because of these risks, we can’t take responsibility for replacing material that is effectively irreplaceable. On the rare occasions when we do agree to work with a customer’s own stone, it is strictly under a full disclaimer.

We completely understand why people ask this question. Often, it’s about saving money — but not always. Many customers are motivated by sustainability, wanting to make good use of existing materials, reduce waste, and recycle wherever possible — all admirable reasons!

That said, there are several different situations in which the question “Can you cut my own granite?” arises, and our response can vary depending on the specific circumstances. Here are a few common examples:

  • Whole sets of granite worktops purchased second-hand — for example, as a job lot on eBay, or being moved from one kitchen to another. We never cut or install worktops in these situations, and we strongly advise against attempting to fit them yourself. What might work well when altering a second-hand dress simply doesn’t translate to handling heavy, brittle stone.

  • Kitchen renovations involving existing stone that needs cutting or modification, with NO NEW STONE BEING ADDED. We rarely take on this type of work, unless it’s extremely local — and even then, only under a strict disclaimer. We are slightly more open to it if the stone was originally purchased from us.

Generally, instead of doing the work ourselves, we prefer to refer customers to independent fitters who can handle the job privately, again under a disclaimer, if such a fitter is available. Our own stonemasons typically have plenty of work and are understandably reluctant to take on additional, potentially risky tasks outside of their regular schedule.

  • Kitchen renovations where the customer’s own granite needs modification and additional stone IS being added. Because these projects involve the sale of new stone, they align more closely with our normal business model. However, any work on the existing stone is still carried out strictly under a disclaimer.

It’s also important to note that achieving a perfect colour or pattern match between old and new stone can be very difficult or impossible. Some customers address this by using a contrasting worktop in areas where the old and new pieces don’t meet directly, which can create a practical and visually appealing solution.

  • Trimming, repolishing, or drilling sections of granite that the customer can bring into our workshop. For simple tasks like a single saw cut or drilling a hole, we are often happy to help on a disclaimer basis, sometimes even while you wait.

However, we do not undertake full fabrication work using customer-supplied sections — our workshop already has plenty of offcuts for smaller projects like vanity tops, and taking on additional stone fabrication would be impractical.

Summing up: We always aim to be helpful and neighbourly, but our priority must remain protecting and focusing on our core kitchen worktop business. We sell granite and quartz, and from that supply we fabricate worktops — as well as vanity tops, bars, barbecue layouts, and hearths on occasion.

When we supply the stone, we take full responsibility for any breakages or loss during the manufacturing process. This can mean replacing a section — sometimes more than once — to ensure the final work meets our customer’s expectations.

For peace of mind, let us handle the stress of cutting and working with granite — on stone we supply, not stone you bring in yourself!
