Cosmic White Granite Worktops - Redhill, Surrey
A relatively compact terraced house in Redhill had a wall removed at the rear so as to create a large kitchen, dining and family space. Mr and Mrs B chose Cosmic White Granite – a huge statement stone. I did their quote at the beginning, and when I turned up to photograph after installation, I wondered how the big Cosmic White island would work in their home. I needn’t have worried; the effect is really pleasing, the kitchen is really practical, and they are more than really happy with the job!
Granite Worktops Redhill - The Raw Material
The customer wanted Cosmic White granite. We usually buy this stone from our friends at Granite Granite, who also supply us with Cambria Quartz. When I first saw their slab on our arrivals rack I felt it was a bit too dark to be typical Cosmic White, but it was exactly what my customers were looking for. Mr and Mrs B wanted the darkest, wildest slabs that we could find for them!
Granite Worktops Redhill - The Kitchen
Despite the fairly major reworking of the rear of the house, the kitchen could also be described as an upgrade. The nearly new appliances from the previous kitchen were carried over; dishwasher, washing machine and tumble-dryer are all separate units, and not built in. Units are by Benchmarx, who also supplied the AEG hob, Hafele sink and tap.
Granite Worktops Redhill - The Finer Details
L-shape worktops, a large island and a homework corner make this a really practical family kitchen. The island is the family’s main eating area, so this kitchen is truly the heart of the home.
A metre of worktop over a 500mm kitchen unit, creates a desk space for homework and entertainment use. Just add the Mac and the wall-mounted TV and the kitchen starts looking more multipurpose.
One-and-a-half bowl stainless steel sink in the reversible, T-shaped pattern fitted big bowl on the left, with parallel drainage grooves coming off the larger bowl
The windowsill has been made in the same Cosmic White granite, with upstand meeting the sill, making cleaning easy and practical. Freestanding appliances under the worktops.
Island for Dining
Because the island is both food prep and dining area, the relatively unusual position of the dishwasher makes perfect sense: cutlery and crockery go straight in here from the table. The big sofa is of a piece with this multi-purpose family room.
Cosmic White granite is a strongly patterned stone. Our customers picked unusually dark slabs with a strong pattern and contrast so as to get this effect on the island in their Redhill, Surrey, home.
The kitchen has standard upstands throughout, except beneath the sill and behind the AEG five-burner hob, where a high splashback has been fitted. The big pattern makes a strong statement across the room.
With a big patterned stone like Cosmic White granite there is no avoiding visible joins. We opted for a smart graphite black: neat and tidy! Detail here of the joins between worktop, upstand and extra-high upstand beneath the sill, just behind the sink.
This detail shot of a drainage groove shows the level of pattern in the Cosmic White granite. This kind of big pattern is very liveable-with, getting a long way away from the fingermark and dust issues that black granites can throw at you.
Small-radius curves on exposed corners are safe while avoiding losing too much of the granite surface, as big curves would do
Writing at the end of 2018, I can say that this installation was one of the most satisfying of the year. I love really exciting natural stone; Cosmic White granite worktops are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they make a big statement and are great to see installed. And Mr and Mrs B’s enthusiasm for the stone and satisfaction with the countertops really brought us a lot of joy. A good job, well done!
