THE WHITE STUFF: LOOKING FOR WHITE GRANITE WORKTOPS

White Granite Worktops

White granite worktops are still hugely strong sellers, despite the growth in the market for quartz kitchen worktops. But getting good white stones hasn’t always been easy. Kashmir White used to be the staple of the stone kitchen countertop industry in the UK, but a series of scandals involving illegal quarrying led to a number of quarries being closed, and the subsequent near disappearance of Kashmir White from the British scene.

Kashmir White – Classic White Granite Worktops

I wrote about this some four years ago. Since then, supplies of Kashmir White granite have restarted, but the price is higher and the look doesn’t seem to be quite what it was.

One of the first materials to grow in popularity as a result of the Kashmir White problems was River White. This stone was (at the time) inexpensive and tended to be overlooked because of surface and maintenance issues. However, it came into its own due to the shortage.

The delicate river-weed-like veining fitted perfectly into the soft greeny greys that were so big in the Farrow and Ball dominated kitchen paint market at the time. The wholesale price of good quality River White nigh-on tripled – and then good-quality stone became harder to come by. Twas ever thus.

Sensa Colonial White – white granite worktops without the re-sealing headache

The next white granite worktop stone to grow in strength in the market was Colonial White. Another Indian stone, like Kashmir and River, it has far less of their linear look. This makes it much more flexible for use in kitchens with corner joins. It is relatively porous, though, which makes Cosentino Sensa such a sensible choice. Pre-sealed and guaranteed for years, here are white granite worktops without the maintenance headache!

The white granite worktop stone we have received in the warehouse is Thunder White. I like it! Non-linear pattern, with fascinating crystal structure and a good overall colour, I think this stone is a winner. It has (at the moment) fewer of those Marmite-factor squashed-cranberry spots that the other stones have. I suspect that if these slabs (ordered in and reserved for customers) hang around long enough, there may be other takers.
