AG SPONSORED WALKERS: MACMILLAN AND MARSDEN

Cancer - The Big C

I don’t know if we are a typical company or not, but an awful lot of us have had the shadow of cancer fall on our families over the last few years. Some have lost close relatives; others have close relatives who are seriously ill with the disease at the moment.

All of us have reason for gratitude to the NHS and other organisations which support cancer care and cure, and research into the disease and its treatment. This spring five of us are involved in sponsored walks in aid of just such organisations. If you would like to help, please follow the links below.

Macmillan Cancer Support - The South Coast Mighty Hike

On 10 June, our chief templator, Jonathan Lake, will be walking a full marathon along the South Coast in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Jon’s reasons for gratitude to Macmillan go back especially to the period when he lost his parents. With him will be the AG Granite Wombles, Ben Taylor, AG workshop manager, Dave Peck and Scott Crossley, worktop fitters. All are long-term AG people and part of our own granite worktops family, and all have their own family reasons to want to help.

The walk they are doing is not a light undertaking. The stretch from Seaford to Eastbourne, up and down over the Seven Sisters, is particularly gruelling in my experience, and I wouldn’t fancy starting it having already walked from Brighton!

Royal Marsden Cancer Charity - The Marsden March

On 14 May, Andrew King, Sales and Marketing person and writer of this blog, will be doing the Marsden March again in support of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Last year, I did the five mile version with my dad and sister Liz, and our old friend, Sally Jarman. It was the last proper walk I ever did with dad. He died at the start of September, followed by Liz in mid-December. Both had been receiving treatment at the Royal Marsden for a number of years; both enjoyed prolonged life due to that treatment; both left us with an ache inside and a fresh hatred of this disease which snatches away too many lives.

The full Marsden March covers the ground between the hospital’s Fulham and Sutton sites. This is a 15 mile route, most of it on pavement, with a slight upslope overall from the Thames to the Downs.

This year I hope to be back to the full fifteen mile Marsden March route. We should have a wider circle of family bolstering the numbers of the Caterham Convoy, as we march in memory of Dad and Liz, as well as in ongoing support of the hospital as they care for mum and for many other friends known to us.
