Beckenham is a town located in the London Borough of Bromley, Kent, England. The area has a rich history dating back to the Roman occupation of Britain. The name Beckenham is believed to have been derived from the Saxon words “Bacan” (meaning “stream”) and “Ham” (meaning “homestead”).
During the Middle Ages, Beckenham was a small village, with the main industry being farming. The town began to grow in the 18th century with the development of the coaching industry, which led to the building of many inns and taverns along the main road between London and the south coast.
In the 19th century, Beckenham became a popular residential area for wealthy Londoners, who built large houses and villas in the area. Many of these houses still stand today and are protected by conservation orders.

The town also played an important role in the development of the railway industry in the 19th century. The first railway line to Beckenham was opened in 1857, linking the town to the London to Dover line. This led to a further increase in the population, as people were able to travel more easily to and from the capital.
During World War II, Beckenham was heavily bombed by the German Luftwaffe. The town suffered significant damage, and many buildings were destroyed or damaged. After the war, Beckenham was rebuilt and expanded, with many new houses and flats being built to accommodate the growing population.
Today, Beckenham is a thriving suburban town with a diverse population and a range of amenities, including parks, shops, restaurants, and pubs. It is also home to a number of notable landmarks and attractions, including the Beckenham Place Park and the David Bowie Memorial.
