We are hiring! Needed: Two trainee stonemasons

Well, we are looking to recruit new staff. Specifically we need two people, one primarily for the workshop/warehouse, and one primarily on the vans. That means that a driving licence is essential for one new recruit. Relevant experience (carpentry, stone work, building) would be helpful, but not essential. Basic numeracy (especially when it comes to spatial awareness and measurements), decent communication skills and a willingness to work responsibily in a team are crucial.

If we could clone Spencer, we would!

We have recruited people who are completely new to the industry before. Sometimes that has been very successful indeed – our sawyer and warehouseman Spencer is a case in point. So this opportunity could suit a young person looking to develop valuable skills in a sought-after craft. A level of physical fitness and strength is a prerequisite; although we have many tools and ways of making the work easier, you cannot escape the fact that our product is heavy!

Andy’s advert for the two positions runs like this:

Opportunity to join a successful family owned company as a Stonemason Apprentice or Fitters’ Mate depending on experience. Working under our experienced Workshop Manager, you will be responsible for fabricating and installing solid stone worktops in customer’s homes. You may also be involved in selecting appropriate materials from our stocks, marking out and using specialist NC machinery cutting worktops and other slab stone products..

This is a physical role, and will demand good verbal English communication, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. The role would suit someone used to working with their hands, and who has good attention to detail.

You must be able to work safely, and follow instructions to handle the expensive and heavy raw materials.

You must live within a commutable distance from the Gatwick Airport area. There is limited public transport in the village, so you will need to have your own transport.

Full training will be given, and there will be a trial period.
