East Sussex sometimes has the reputation for being a stick-in-the-mud county. It is certainly conservative (large and small C!), and the stereotype of resistance to change is summed up in the saying “Sussex people wunt be druv”. But actually, the county is far more open to the New than people think. The University of Sussex, situated at Falmer in East Sussex, is one of the country’s leaders in research and technical innovation, and its own Innovation Centre is dedicated to stimulating Start Ups and business development.
I think it is the desire for both tasteful innovation and quality craftsmanship which drives the blend of old and new in East Sussex. There is a lot of classical craftsmanship here – I have friends who are high end joiners and upholsterers, blacksmiths and farriers. There are centres of arts and crafts here – just think of New England House in Brighton, where my friend Karina runs Sashabay Soft Furnishings. So much creative and artisanal talent under one roof!
Innovative East Sussex people are open to new things in the home too. Although we sell plenty of natural stone, granite worktops in the county, we see an ever increasing number of quartz installations. Man-made, engineered stone is composed of about 93% sand, glass, quartz and other minerals, and around 7% plastic resin. For more about the differences between granite and quartz worktops and their respective advantages, please see here.
East Sussex is a great county: seaside and countryside, good food and drink, varied towns and villages, and the sun even shines a fair bit! Here are a few favourite places.
Newhaven. Hardly romantic, you may say – but this is where the ferry leaves for Dieppe! Actually, not a bad little place, and an East Sussex town where we often install quartz worktops.Â
