Cancer - The Big C
A year ago I wrote: “I don’t know if we are a typical company or not, but an awful lot of us have had the shadow of cancer fall on our families over the last few years. Some have lost close relatives; others have close relatives who are seriously ill with the disease at the moment.”
Since that article, cancer has affected my own immediate family afresh, and other families at AG, and all of have once again been thankful for the quality of care from the NHS and from the hospice movement.
And we are all grateful too for the parallel organisations which support cancer research, treatment and care. I was unable to walk in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity this year, but I am so pleased that the same intrepid four lads from AG are doing the Macmillan Mighty Hike all over again. If you would like to help, please follow the links below… or even here.
Macmillan Cancer Support - The South Coast Mighty Hike
On 8 June, four members of the Affordable Granite team will be walking a full marathon along the South Coast in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Jon, our tenplator, first put this together last year, and he is taking the lead again. His personal reasons for gratitude to Macmillan go back to the period when he lost his mum and dad. Once again, with him will be the other AG Granite Wombles, Ben, AG workshop manager, Dave and Scott, worktop fitters. All are long-term AG people and part of our own granite worktops family, and all have their own family reasons to want to help.
The Mighty Hike they are doing is not a light undertaking. The Seven Sisters, shown here, may be the home straight, but in my experience they are a gruelling walk even if you start fresh. I don’t fancy them after 20 miles of downland, and especially not in June heat.
Jon – granite worktops templator
Scott – experienced stonemason and granite worktop installerÂ
Dave – equally experienced stonemason and granite worktop fitter
Ben – workshop manager
We have left the big push for sponsorship quite late this year – but there is time to get involved, and the lads would so appreciate every gift that is pledged, large or small. Having walked for the Marsden before I know what a difference it makes to know that people are behind you in the effort!
So… Jon’s link (and for the whole team, tbh) is here.

The full Marsden March covers the ground between the hospital’s Fulham and Sutton sites. This is a 15 mile route, most of it on pavement, with a slight upslope overall from the Thames to the Downs.
This year I hope to be back to the full fifteen mile Marsden March route. We should have a wider circle of family bolstering the numbers of the Caterham Convoy, as we march in memory of Dad and Liz, as well as in ongoing support of the hospital as they care for mum and for many other friends known to us.
We are Affordable Granite, the leading installer of quartz of all kinds worktops in Surrey, Sussex and across the South East. We hope to be not only a company known for our quality and good service, but also as good employers and as an overall contributor to the good of our community. We love to see members of staff doing something positive! For questions, queries and quotes connected with any aspect of worktop installation or kitchen design, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01293 863992 or by email on sales@affordablegranite.co.uk/ .
