Prices are rising, wages are tight, but we still want to make solid investments in our homes and make them great places to live. Unsurprisingly, here at Affordable Granite we get a lot of questions about budget materials. Here is a round-up of some great affordable quartz worktops.

Over this year we have blogged several times about some high-end quartz products. The trend to soft, natural faux-marble, with both large and small veining, continues. The quartz manufacturers are working hard to make the best copies, regardless of price.
But there is still a market for simpler, cheaper stones. Contemporary kitchens, with slab doors and high-gloss finishes are still very popular. Natural and natural-look stones are not suited to the modern designs. Many people go for very smooth single-colour stones, or for sparkly quartz materials. Mirror quartz is more economical than the marble-look, but it is still not the cheapest.

We stock four granular quartzes, from two suppliers, Silestone and Quarella. With this type of quartz, most manufacturers have some very similar products. By keeping our relationships open we are able to react faster where there are any supply issues or quality problems. We buy in bulk, so are able to pass on some very attractive discounts to you, the customer.

With granular materials small samples can be misleading. A piece of quartz that you can hold in the hand can easily be looked at quite closely, and the grainy structure is easily seen. Install the same stone as a worktop and stand back from it, and that granular texture smooths out into one continuous colour. In practice, grainy quartz is hardly distinguishable from a far more expensive, non-granular quartz.
In addition, the slight grain actually makes these stones much more liveable-with. Dust and finger marks are part of life. You want your kitchen to be clean, but you don’t want a surface that makes it scream. All of these granular quartzes are great in practice. Only the Marengo tends to be a bit smeary.
