CAN YOU FLUSH-MOUNT A HOB IN A GRANITE WORKTOP?

Can you flush-mount a hob in a granite worktop?

Flush-mount hobs (also called flush-fitted, flush-mounted or recessed hobs) have grown in popularity over recent years. As faster electrical heating options have been developed, induction hobs have been overtaking gas as the principle cooker in Britain’s kitchens. The race has been on to make them ever lower profile.  The ultimate in low profile is flush-mounting – where the flange around the hob drops into a shallow recess cut into the worktop, making the upper, glass, heating surface completely level with the worktop around.

It isn’t only induction and ceramic hobs that can be flush mounted. They may have begun the trend, but these days it is possible to fit glass-plate-mounted gas hobs in this way. Here are photos of a gas hob flush-mounted in a central London (Westminster) kitchen. The stone is Classic Quartz Marbre Carrara – see our case study.

Are there reasons not to flush-mount a hob?

We feel that there are. Flush-mount hobs are trendy, but (like many designer-driven trends) they may sound better in a showroom than they do in a working kitchen.

  1. It is not cheap – time on our CNC machine is costly, and routing out that shallow track for the hob flange takes time. We charge around £180 extra for flush-mounting.
  2. Because all hobs are subject to getting warm (well, yes!), there has to be an expansion gap around them. So although many hobs can be flush-mounted, it isn’t quite as neat as it sounds – personally I feel that the silicone-filled gap to the side of the flange is more unsightly that the flange itself with zero gap beneath it.

If a flush-mount hob is a must-have, we will do it for you, rest assured. But we do not particularly recommend them. There may be other kitchen devices or looks that are actually more effective and practically helpful in your home.
